"pillars and dowel rods" has been one of the last areas of the site to go properly live, so please accept our apologies for the delay. Traditional plastic cake pillars are actually in fairly short supply as many are no longer being produced so we'll add new ranges, heights, colours and shapes as soon as these become available.
We're happy to now start offering a range of cake pillars and accessories with lots more shapes, colours and heights being added soon. Everything is EU food approved for use on cakes.
Pillars are normally retail packed but may occasionally be loose-packed, if received from the manufacturers that way.
There are various theories on how best to use pillars safely . . . we'd certainly advise using dowel rods which should be cut to fit between the cakeboards - pillars are hollow to accommodate dowel rods. Some cake makers also prefer to use thin cake cards as additional support but these can detract from the appearance of the cake, so are sometimes placed underneath the sugarpaste . . . but that is not often ideal as it makes cutting the cake a lot more awkward.
In general, as long as you use a good quality sugarpaste like Regalice, the safest method is normally using pillars with dowel rods.
All dowels are plastic and, again, approved for use with cakes.
